High altitude medicine

This one week intinerant course starts in the city of La Paz (3510 m) and continues on to Tiahuanacu, Titicaca Lake and finally the city of Potosi. Echocardiography at high altitude
Hands-on color doppler echocardiography lessons. The Adult Echocardiography courses provide an introduction to basic cardiac ultrasound techniques. It includes two-dimensional and m-mode echocardiography and spectral and color flow Doppler. An introduction to basic ultrasound and Doppler physics is followed by an overview of normal and abnormal patterns as well as quantitative analysis. Pathophysiology relevant to common cardiac diagnoses is covered. There are several interpretation workshops. High altitude echocardiography is reviewed.

This lecture is given by Prof. Mieczyslaw Pokorski that not only provides the basics of carotid body function but also the latest scientific advance in the area. Prof. Pokorski, is a most distinguished scientist from the Academy of Sciences of Poland. His experience in carotid body research is world known. He comes to La Paz, in order to set up a laboratory on Carotid body research at high altitude.

Research techinques at high altitude

This course provides the basics of setiing up a research program. Carrying out the research and ends with a final manuscript. Most research projects are in association to the reserach being carried out at IPPA but there is flexibility depending on the initiative of the student. Facilities for carrying out research in our labs will be agreed.
